Doilys and Buttons and another giveaway.

I know, how many posts can I fit into one day? I'm on a roll and have had lots of posts planned but not happened. I will try and space them out in future :)
As I have been busy here my two littlies have kept themselves occupied and mostly out of mischief, which is pretty good for them! However when you hear what sounds like a thousand small hard objects hitting the polished floor of the sewing room, you know it won't be fun. My first thought was dd10s bead containers. They had already been hit last week, luckily minimal damage but I am still treading on strays here and there. But no, it was my box of vintage buttons, hidden in a vintage turkish delight box. Hmm, maybe not such a good choice? Luckily one handful sounds like a thousand so the damage was minimal but while I was there I thought I would show you my buttons :)

What is a vintage suitcase good for? Why, for keeping all the vintage crochet and embroidered doilys you have collected of course!

How lucky am I to have such a lovely collection? I have these grand plans to use them in many different crafty ways but need some inspiration. For the next week (winner chosen by me next tuesday the 9th of June, South Australian time) there will be a prize for the best comment with a link to a tute or pics or instructions for using vintage linen. This is what you can win: 5 of my prized crocheted and embroidered doilys, including postage to anywhere in the world. :) I hope I get lots of ideas because I have lots of doilys!

  1. Gosh you are on a roll today! I don't have any links, pics or instructions, but I love seeing little girls tops and dresses in lineny fabric with a little doily stitched on, off centre at the hemline, centre front neckline, itty bitty ones on the sleeve etc, soo cute especially with a lot of contrast.

  2. I don't have a tut or link to share either, but, will an idea for inspiration help? I have fairly long hair which gets extremely hot during the summer. To help, I often wear it in a bun. I use a doily, attached to a pony tail elastic by single crochet to cover the bun. They are really quick to make, just a few stitches to anchor it to the elastic and all those stray hairs are contained nicely.

  3. Here's my idea: What if you applique them onto a piece of linen and make a tote bag?

  4. I have a passion for aprons and think that ones made out of vintage linen and fabric are the best. So, my link for you is this:

There's over 50 apron patterns and if you look at last years link you will find 50 more. I hope you enjoy it.

  5. Wow you have a hard giveaway :-) I will tell you what I saw recently done with a vintage dresser scarf. It was sewn up the sides together, and a drawstring was added to the top. My niece was given a very cute gift inside this vintage bag. Very clever use of the linen. I love old linens and finding them is a treasure :-)

  6. Wow Helen. Gorgeous collection. I don't have a tute link but an idea, which is to turn them into a pocket on a girl's top or dress. I'm about to do this for T. Will let you know how I go!

  8. Yikes! What a gorgeous collection :)

I don't have a tute, but I like to sew them to the neckline of sweet little girls tops made from vintage/recycled sheets, like this...

    Fingers crossed for me!!

This is part two of 3 for ideas using vintage doilies, lace etc. I've also seen hankies folded a certain way and used as butterfly wings on a quilt. Also as dresses on a quilt. Dont have pictures handy, but I may have something on my puter somewhere.....I had a few of my grannies hankies that I'd like to display somehow and those caught my eye.

I would think some could be put together to make a cute valance or maybe even attached for a coverlet.

  12. I love this tutorial for using vintage doilies http://scrumdillydilly.blogspot.com/2008/09/dilly-doily-bag-tutorial.html

Such a wonderful way to parade them around AND be "green" at the same time.
